Centennial Job Corps
The Centennial Job Corps in Nampa, ID has provided essential volunteer services for the Race to Robie Creek since 2000. The students, ages 16 to 24 years, and staff from this federal jobs and education training facility have helped the look, form and function of the Race to Robie Creek, especially at the finish area.
Each year since 2000, 15 to 25 eager Job Corps students have arrived at the Race to Robie Creek finish area at 8:30 AM and worked until almost 5:00 PM. During their volunteer hours they set up tents, tables, road barricades, finish chutes, the finish line, the staging area, food and drink distribution and serving areas and an area for data entry and collection. They also assist the runners and walkers at the finish, provide crowd management services, pick up trash, break down and load-out the park set-up and clean up after everyone has left.
In 2001 one of the most demanding jobs for the Race to Robie Creek volunteers, food preparation and service at the post-race party, was assumed by the Culinary Arts students and staff from Centennial Job Corps. Sam D’Orazio and his crew, with the help of other Job Corps students, have provided an excellent menu and service to all participants, friends and volunteers.
To date, nearly 200 Job Corps students have volunteered over 1,000 hours toward the success of the Race to Robie Creek. This year 30 to 50 students and supporting staff members, will be on hand to do it all again. Given their level of enthusiasm and support for the race, the students often need to be told to take a well-deserved break. These students are very eager to demonstrate and prove that they can overcome the adverse circumstances they have dealt with most of their young lives. Job Corps has given them another chance in life and the Race to Robie Creek has become one of this year’s most anticipated and sought after community volunteer activities on their year-long calendar.
If you are lucky enough to be part of the finish/post race party activities, the Job Corps students are easy to spot. Please let them know how much they are appreciated. It is amazing what a hand-shake or pat on the back, along with a few kind words, means to them.
At the Race to Robie Creek, the winners are not limited to the participants. The Robie Creek Committee owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Job Corps students and staff. It simply wouldn’t be the same race without their participation!
